Update 009
It's a Little Rock Wild Card Weekend
Matt Roberts Volley

Matt Roberts did it again. This time in very convincing format. Playing against a great baseline player, he got to the net on a number of key points to secure a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Julio Peralta of Chile. It was a great win for Matt and a great win for Little Rock.

Consider these firsts:

First time an Arkansas player has been in the finals of the Little Rock USTA Futures event since it began 28 years ago.
First time there have been three Arkansas based players in the finals - Matt Roberts in the singles final and Raul Bermudez / Dinko Halachev in the doubles finals.

Matt Roberts and the doubles team of Raul Bermudez / Dinko Halachev both got into the main draw through a wild card given to them by the tournament committee. Honestly, we felt they would compete well and would be great for Little Rock but we didn't expect them both to make it to the finals.

Come out to Pleasant Valley Country Club to enjoy Breakfast on the Green between 10:30 and 12:30 before the finals start at 1:00. Breakfast on the Green is a champagne brunch on the veranda overlooking the golf course that will set the stage for a memorable finals event.

Good bye and good luck, Marcus Fugate

Marcus Fugate Semi Final

Today didn't end like Marcus Fugate planned when he got up this morning. Two close sets, both ending in tie breakers won by his opponent, #1 seed Artem Sitak from Moscow.

But as Marcus moves on he leaves his impression on many of us who got to know him over the past week. He came through as a qualifier and played three matches before the main draw players arrived. He was Drew Dodge's partner (pictured to the right) in the Play with the Pros Pro Am held last Sunday. Drew got to be a ball kid today and was on the court while he fought to the end in his semi-final match. This is an experience he'll never forget and one that will motivate him to work on his own tennis game.

The were many "C'mon Marcus" shouts during the match today because Marcus made many friends with his attitude on and off the court throughout the week. We wish you the best and appreciate the example you set throughout the tournament.
