Here are some tips if you are going to be a Ball Boy/Girl!
- Towels for placing knees will be at the net positions
- A person to retrieve balls outside the fence will be used
- Ball boys and girls will serve as score keeper
- Keep all balls from the view of the players until they are ready.
- Bounce ball 2/3rds of the way between you and the player.
- The player may hit some balls back to you or ask for all that you have: they are looking for a particular ball or balls.
- Hold arms up to display the balls you have.
- Bounce ball to server first before receiving ball from net person (if the player is ready)
- Always roll balls down the line.
- During warm-up wait until there is a pause in the action before retrieving balls hit into the net
- Run quietly
- The net persons will retrieve most ball that are in between the baselines
- If the ball hits the net within 1/3rd of the side you are on, return to the same side
- Net person will retrieve balls and distribute balls when new balls are put into play. Usually after the first 7 games and then every 9 games thereafter.
- Net person must pay attention! they are the ones who control the action.
- Rule: the balls stay on the same side if the players change sides. If the game ends and the players do not change sides the balls must be rolled to the other side.
- Keep a net person on either side of the court to assist in transferring balls from one side to the other.
- The net person is key during tie-breakers.
- During tie-breakers the net person should keep a ball in hand
- Rule: Never touch a ball until it has bounce twice or hit the fence (the point must have been completed).
- The tournament is very important to the players and their attitude may reflect their seriousness. The umpire will protect ball boys and girls.
- Stop all motion when server starts motion.
- Do not transport balls between first and second serves.
- Out of position stances may bother some players so they may ask you to return to your regular position
- Never speak to a player or applaud
- A good ball team is not noticed by others!
